At HatTrick Dalmatians, we've been dedicated to showing, exhibiting, and breeding Dalmatians since 1991. Over these three decades, we've learned what it takes to raise healthy, happy Dalmatians. Here are our essential care tips to help your spotted companion thrive.
Nutrition: The Foundation of Health
Proper nutrition is crucial for your Dalmatian's optimal health. At HatTrick Dalmatians, we advocate for a raw food diet, which we've found promotes:
Healthier coat and skin
Better digestion and nutrient absorption
Improved dental health
Enhanced energy levels and vitality
Early nutrition is particularly important. We begin introducing our puppies to quality nutrition from the start, setting them up for a lifetime of good health.
We feed a RAW dalmatian-appropriate diet, we will take a deep-dive into feeding Dalmatians a raw diet in a future blog post.
Exercise and Mental Stimulation
Dalmatians are energetic, athletic dogs that require regular exercise. They were originally bred as carriage dogs, so they have stamina to spare! Plan for:
At least 60 minutes of daily exercise
Activities like running, hiking, or playing fetch
Mental stimulation through training and puzzle toys
TIP: combine physical and mental 'workouts'. Teach a proper Heal, fetch, find-it and other activities which you can combine into your daily walk/exercise routine.
Socialization with other dogs and people, but stay away from dog parks, which are capable of doing more harm than good (more on that in a future blog post).
Grooming and Coat Care
Despite their short coat, Dalmatians shed year-round. Regular grooming helps manage shedding and keeps their coat healthy:
Brush 2-3 times per week with a rubber curry brush
The more hair brush out, the less hair than ends up on your sofa/rugs.
Bathe only when necessary to preserve natural oils
ALL shampoo must be dilluted before use.
Trim nails regularly
We reccomend a grinder. More on that in a future post.
Check and clean ears weekly
Health Monitoring
At HatTrick Dalmatians, we emphasize the importance of health and breed conformation. Regular veterinary care is essential:
Annual veterinary check-ups
Do not vaccinate every year - as permitted by law (e.g. 3 year rabies). When it comes to vaccines, less is more.
Monitor for breed-specific concerns like urinary issues
Ensure access to fresh water at all times
If you have hard water or on a well, consider distilled water.
Temperament and Training
Temperament is one of our top priorities at HatTrick Dalmatians. A well-trained Dalmatian is a joy to live with:
Start training and socialization early
We require puppies to go through puppy kindergarden at about 12 weeks of age or after second puppy shot.
Use positive reinforcement methods
Be consistent with rules and boundaries
Provide plenty of interaction and companionship
The HatTrick Dalmatians Commitment
